Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, a iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy is the youngest out of 6 siblings. Nancy grew up listening to the records of her father and his love for music. Nancy knew that she was going to be a singer at the age of 4 years old. She developed her talents by participating in the church choir. When she won a talent contest in a television show at the age of 15, she started appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. In the year she turned 15years old, Nancy started her career in night clubs. Nancy was just 17 when she graduated highschool. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for only one semester Nancy quit to become professional performers. She made her first recording with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy made her debut album through Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to move to New York in order to improve her career. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in 1959. Within a month she got an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx which was where her agent was introduced to her voice and agreed to sign her. His agent signed her with Capitol in 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess who I saw today. Capitol Records issued five Nancy Wilson albums over a two-year period. Under Adderley Wilson's leadership, Wilson started focusing on R&B however she soon switched to jazz and torch music. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 was instrumental to propel her into the spotlight and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. In the year following, this led to her being booked at New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
