Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was the Chillicothe ironworker on February 20, 1937. She was the daughter of Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy is the youngest of six siblings. Nancy was heavily influenced by her father's musical tastes as well as the music played at her family home. When she was just four an age, she realized that she was going to be a star in the singing world. She developed her talent through her participation in the church choir. Her first recording was in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she was on tour from 1956 until 1958. Nancy began her recording career with Dot Records in 1956, when she was part of the band. Cannonball addederley suggested she move in New York for her career and, in 1959, she moved in The Big Town. The agent of Adderley heard about her in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. Within a month of her arrival to New York, she was in the city. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in the year 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess Who You Saw Today. Her albums were a hit and Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley influenced her to move away from R&B and to focus on jazz and torch song. Their 1962 collaboration Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley was instrumental in propelling her to fame as she released her biggest smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. The following year the release, she was being booked at New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
