Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award award-winning jazz musician. She was born February 20, 1937, in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson who worked at an ironworks and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy was the oldest of six kids. Nancy was influenced by her father's music taste as well as the music played at her house. As young as four year old, she knew she would be a singer. She developed her talent through her participation in the choir at church. In high school when she started appearing often in Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. Around the same time she started working in nightclubs. Following her graduation from high school the 17-year old Nancy matriculated for one year at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University prior to leaving and becoming an accomplished performer. In 1956, she recorded her debut album in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed together between 1956 and 1958. Nancy made her debut record on Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball suggested that she move in New York and go to The Big Town to further her career. Adderley's Agent heard her at The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she signed. Within a month of her arrival in New York City. The contract was signed by Capitol Records in 1960. In 1960, she debuted with the song. Guess whom I am seeing in the present. Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. The first was focused on R&B, but under Adderley's influence, she began to embrace jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley together with their 1962 group made her a star. The singer had her breakout smash Tell Me the Truth by 1963. The following year, this led to her being booked at the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
